no fixed living place. taking risks. no rehearsal. permanent movement.no predicted end. self selection.no repetition. passing limitations. mobile energy. extended vulnerability.direct contact. primary reactions. local relation. exposure to chance. Above is a dance, entitled Eager, that I choreographed at The American Dance Festival this past summer. It is something that I am most proud of. We put it together in just a few short weeks.
In my choreography, I was exploring the idea of human connectivity, touch, and the feeling of being seen and being held. We often did exercises in class at the dance festival where we would find a partner and look into their eyes for about 10 minutes without looking away. It was powerful. We often cried. After prolonged eye contact with another human, it is impossible to see them as anything less than magic.
summer or something like that -
there is the hum of a car engine
trying to start in the distance
the grass is finally a violent shade of green
i have discovered a not-so-quiet place to write.
i was looking forward to the blistering heat of mid-summer
and falling in love,
falling in love.
i was looking forward to
that glimpse of sunlight
in a lover’s hair and
the sticky afternoon glow.
i wanted their gaze on mine—
piercing through a doorway.
in the early evening, a shadow dances,
and a warm breeze floats.
